“The Firemaker” is part of Peter May’s series set in China. I have read and loved his books set in Scotland, but somehow had not read any of the China series. May tells a great story, and I loved this one, as well. I enjoyed reading a mystery in the midst of the complex and diverse life in Beijing.
May sets The Firemaker in China of which he has personal knowledge. This makes the book both educational and entertaining.
The Firemaker is a lot of book packed into one story. Peter May uses the two protagonists’ backgrounds, tenets and cultural biases as point/counterpoint to demonstrate daily life in Beijing as China begins leapfrogging into the 21 st century. So, I tried to The Firemaker, the first book in what’s known as his China series. And here’s where how I opened this review comes into play. If this had been the first of Peter May’s books I’d read, I doubt I would ever have picked up another. This was such a disappointment at so many levels. 2018-01-09 Peter May always researches the background to his stories so well that the details are almost as interesting as th actual detective plots. This is the kind of book that you don't want to put down but at the same time you don't want to finish it!
